How to Rekey a Lock
Rekeying a lock can be done on any type of lock and for any type of reason. Changing locks regularly is part of home security but keying a lock can be done to make certain that your home is safe from thieves. This can make the difference between a stolen house and a new home or a home that is safe and secure.
There are a few basic information that you need to know about repaying a lock and how it works. It is important to be able to differentiate a rekeying lock from a standard repair, so you will need to know the differences between a rekeying lock and changing locks at the same time.
The two main components to any lock are the key or tumbler and the lanyard. Rekeying a lock is different from simply changing the lanyard because the lock remains in place permanently. The lock is simply reassembled and replaced with a new one, this is not a replacement for the original lock.
Different locks have different purposes and different ways of functioning. Most locks have three parts: the key, the tumbler, and the pin. The key is usually made of steel and has a metal screw and a pin head inside that pushes against the lanyard to open the door.
Once the key has been inserted and turned in to a certain position the tumbler is inserted into a hole in the center of the pin. The tumbler has two pieces inside that pull the pin and the other half of the pin against the other side of the pin. If you look in a lock closely enough you should be able to see the inside of the pin.
When the tumbler or pin is turned in to the right position the lock opens and the key is turned out of its slot. The key is then turned out of its slot in the other direction, thus disengaging the screw in the pin and turning the pin out of its slot. Rekeying a lock is done by turning the screw in one direction and inserting a new pin into the holes in the pin.
Once the pin is in the hole and turned in the pin is turned out. The screw on the pin side of the pin is disengages and the pin is now free to turn in the correct direction. When the pin turns it pushes the pin against the other piece and disengages the screw that holds the pin in place and the pin goes out of the lock’s slot. Once the pin goes out the pin goes back into the key hole and the screw on the pin is turned. The lock is complete and can be locked.
This means that once the rekeying process is finished, a new lock can be installed for your lock without needing to change the locks themselves. Some locks do need to be renewed so that a keyed lock can function without the need for a new lock, although not all locks require this.
Some locks do not require a key to be rekeyed because they are already keyed. These locks will be completely locked and cannot be unlocked without the key. Some locks have a special feature called “countersunking” which means that the entire lock is keyed to one key.
A common problem with some locks, especially older locks that have been broken or chipped, is that a key is required to rekey these locks. This is why it is often recommended that locksmiths key lock instead of rekeying them. because locksmiths have the necessary tools to rekey locks and most locksmiths can rekey locks without leaving any marks on the lock itself.
There is a very simple way to unlock a lock and use a keyless lock if a lock is already keyed, but you can also buy new locks that don’t require a key to be rekeyed. You may find that there is a type of lock that is hard to open on its own without a key. In some cases a keyless lock may have an extra slot that you can insert the key through to open the lock. If this is the case, then the lock can be easily renewed and the problem solved.
Another option is to replace a damaged or broken lock or to find another lock that will need a new key. The problem that you might run into is that a key can break the lock if you try to rekey a lock that is broken or chipped.
